It’s that time of year again. Spring is almost here and it’s time to make get things started on the right foot with spring lawn care tips so you don’t have to deal with major problems when it’s summertime.
I’ve got some really good spring lawn care tips to share to summarize all the important issues.
For starters mowing your lawn now is key to getting rid of that top layer of dead grass and to promote a really healthy lawn from here on out. The sooner the better. Some tips for mowing your lawn the right way are: check your blades and make sure they are really sharp. If you mow with a dull blade then you will damage the tip of the grass blades an make them susceptible to infections and insects. If you mow your lawn with a sharp blade your grass will recover quicker and help reduce any diseases or weeds.
I get asked. Does your company bags our grass clippings? The answer is leave the clippings on the lawn. Grass clippings add free fertilizer and can provide up to 25% of the lawn’s annual nutrient needs. The Grass clippings are mostly water 75-85% and decompose quickly into the lawn. If the lawn has a jungle like height then it could harm the grass and will leave a blanket of clippings that could block the sun and moisture from getting to the root system. In these scenarios, we bag up the clippings if necessary or blow them off so there is no clumping in any one area.
You want to mow the proper height 2.5 to 3.5 inches is preferred. If your lawn is really high you don’t want to take off more than 1/3rd of the blade or you can do some damage and hurt your grass. When you mow the right height it creates a healthy root system and it also helps prevent weeds from growing in your lawn. If your mower does not have an indicator setting telling you how many inches the blade is. Then you can park it on a section of concrete or driveway (while it is off and not running of course) and get out a tape measure and measure how far the blade is from the ground. If you mow your lawn too short it causes scalping which results in increased weeds and in some cases death of the grass.
It’s important to have a good fertility program set up for the lawn. I recommend having Saratoga Springs Lawn Mowing handle this but you can also do it yourself by buying fertilizer that is a pre-emergent to help prevent weeds and grow a healthy lawn. It is also really important to get your lawn aerated so that it can breathe and it helps to grow a healthy root system which results in a better-looking lawn with more cushion.
Finally, there is the issue of spring bugs and spiders. It is really important to have a professional company come out and spray a bug barrier around your whole house. It is also really good if you have a basement that all the entryways and window wells and sprayed very well so you don’t get an army of spiders and bugs that hatch in the springs and try to take over your home.
