Bare and Dead Grass Spots in Your Lawn are no good and look bad if left unfixed. If you are hoping that the spot will get fixed on its own, it won’t. If you water the bare spots without doing anything else then nothing will happen. Water is essential for growing a green healthy looking lawn but will not fix a dead spot on its own. You will need some cultivating tools and grass seed. I recommend to use Scotts Grow Anywhere Grass Seed or Pennington Grass Seed, or go to your local IFA or farm store and buy grass seed that is recommended for your area.

The first step is to use a hoe, rake, shovel, or fork rake to tear out the dead grass and roots. Then you want to rough up the soil to make it lose. It is a good idea to use fresh soil with fertilizer in it to mix in with the existing dirt. Then you want to add grass seed sparingly so that it is over the whole spot but so that you can still see the ground under the grass seed. Then you want to add a little soil over the top of the grass seed or hay to protect the grass seed from birds and being blown away. As soon as you do this project and add the grass seed it would be a good idea to water the patches so that they are soaked with water. Make sure you water every day or every for the first two weeks to really get the grass to grow as fast as possible. After about a month or two the grass should be fully grown. Be careful not to mow the grass until it has been more than a month so that the grass is as high as the other grass and has established a root system.

A secondary option that is more costly but much quicker is to buy grass sod pieces and cut them for the sizes you need. You still will want to dig out the dead grass and loosen the dirt and even apply new healthy soil to mix in with the existing dirt. Then cut the sod piece for the size you need and put it in the hole. It is good to use a screwdriver to poke holes in the new piece of sod on the edges and try to poke holes through the new piece and the existing grass around it so that you are mixing the grass together and threading the pieces together so that they grow together.
