Water is a precious resource and is not cheap. Water is limited in Utah and especially in Orem, UT where city water charges are always increasing.  Utah is second driest state in the country and yet we have the highest water usages per capita. So it is good to have some tips on how you can help conserve water and cut down on your water bill.

• Check all of your sprinklers while they are on to see if they are working well or if adjustments, sprinkler head cleaning, or sprinkler head replacement needs to be done
• Water during prime hours like before 8 AM or after 8 PM
• Plant region year-round plants that are adapted to Utah weather and seasons and don’t require lots of water to survive
• Sweep or blow your driveways and sidewalks instead of spraying them with a hose using water
• Change lawn mower settings to a three-inch clipping height and try not to cut off more than 1/3 of the lawn height when you mow.
• Avoid busting or freezing pipes by winterizing your sprinkler pipes by opening all of your sprinkler stations to let the water drain out of the pipes, and by not keeping a hose attached to a spigot during winter that will freeze up the spigot
• During the spring months, you don’t need to over water your lawn. It can actually help grow a healthier lawn and root system if you are only watering once a day in the prime hours of morning or evening, five days out of the week
• During Summer months you can water twice a day if you feel like your lawn needs more water, and I would keep it to an every other day schedule.

Indoor Water Conservation Tips and Suggestions

• You should turn off water when you brush your teeth
• Try and keep your showers for 5 minutes
• Lad dishwasher and washing machine full
• Install low flow shower heads and toilets
• Pay attention to water bill and be familiar with your water meter so you know if something changes dramatically that you can make adjustments in your water usage
• Buy appliances that offer energy and water efficiency cycle options
• Fix plumbing fixtures that are old and leaky
• Locate water shutoff so you know how to turn off your water if a pipe bursts
