1. Don’t mow to short and scalp your lawn. Cut about a third of the blade and try to leave grass at least three inches high.
2. Aerate your lawn once a year for healthy lawns that have nutrient growth for a thicker healthier lawn that fights off weeds better.
3. Don’t water too much and create shallow roots for your lawn. Lawns only need an inch or inch and a half per week and could be watered heavily one day a week for twenty minutes.
4. Water in the morning for best results. If you water during the hot hours of the day a lot of water will be lost to evaporation.
5. Sharpen the blades of the mower. Sharp blades make a cleaner more efficient cut that is good for the mower and the grass blades.
6. It is good for the grass to leave mulch grass clippings on it. This creates a kind of compost that can fertilize the grass and make it healthier. If the lawn is too long then the grass clippings could be too concentrated and suffocate the grass and stunt growth.
7. If you are going to bag the clippings then dispose of them in an eco-friendly way of composting or scattering in a wilderness area.
8. Try and not use pesticides on your yard because they will kill weeds but also harm your lawn as well. If you have dandelions you can try using a fertilizer with sulphur to lower the ph of your soil. If you have lots of clover then you need fertilizer with nitrogen or compost or grass clippings.
9. Try and use natural fertilizers. One tip is to spread corn gluten in the fall or spring to prevent weeds from sprouting. Also a healthier lawn can be achieved by spreading fertilizers on lawn and using compost like grass clippings and mulching leaves.
10. Try and use natural pesticides. Another tip you can use for weeds is to create your own weed killer: 5 parts white vinegar, 2 parts water, and one part natural dish soap.
